Summer Student Custodian
Application period: January 7, 2019 – February 14, 2019
University Residences offers housing accommodations during the academic off-season for activities held on Western’s campus and in the greater Bellingham area. Between mid-June and September, thousands of visitors stay in Western’s residential buildings while attending conferences, institutes, tournaments, festivals and youth camps. In order to maintain our facilities throughout the summer conference season and to prepare them for fall, a rigorous housekeeping program employs 40 full-time student custodians. Under the supervision of student lead custodians, the student custodian works 40 hours per week, along with some evenings and weekends. Housing accommodations in Birnam Wood are available to student custodians for the summer at a discounted rate.
Under the supervision of a custodial lead, the student custodian completes all tasks required to effectively prepare residential facilities for occupancy. Five hours of paid training prepares the student custodian to do their work in a safe and efficient manner.
- Safely and effectively operate a variety of professional tools, including backpack- and upright vacuums, wet vacuum, carpet/upholstery extractor, leaf blower, floor scrubber, mop with rolling bucket, broom, squeegee, microfiber cloths and dusters with and without pole tools or extensions.
- Positively and constructively work in a team environment to accomplish all tasks assigned.
- Recognize and report damage and maintenance issues.
- Clean and disinfect the bathrooms; restock paper products.
- Collect and dispose of trash.
- Fold and distribute linen.
- Rearrange furniture and make up the beds.
- Sweep, mop, strip and wax the floors.
- Vacuum and clean the carpets.
- Wipe and dust the furniture and other hard surfaces.
- Full-time enrollment at WWU in spring or summer 2019.
- Commitment to safety of self, others and property, in compliance with WISHA and OSHA standards.
- Willingness and ability to complete rigorous tasks with a high standard of quality and within a given timeline.
- Ability to work independently, self-organize and manage time effectively.
- Ability to collaborate on a staff team as well as provide peer-to-peer education and direction.

- Must be available for the entire contract term; see dates below.
- If hired, must complete the new-hire paperwork prior to mandatory training.

Sunday, Sep 22 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Terms of Employment
- Prior to the start of the conference season, student custodians must attend mandatory paid training on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Fairhaven Chart Room.
- Employment contract dates: June 14 through September 22, 2019.
- Weekly workload is 40 hours: Monday – Friday (7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.). Additional evenings or weekends may be assigned.
- Starting wage is $12.00 per hour
- Optional housing for the contract term is offered in Birnam Wood at a special discount that is 55% off the regular summer rate.
