Sigma Repairs & Relocation
Last updated: 2-27-2026
On November 21, 2025 a heating system issue was discovered in Ridgeway Sigma, and Facilities Development and Operations (FDO) began investigating. FDO has been running diagnostics over the past three weeks to identify the source of the problem. On Friday, December 12, 2025 it was determined the repairs would require extensive work, affecting living conditions for our 100+ Sigma residents. Students were notified as soon as it was determined that the building needed to be vacated.
Due to uncertain repair timelines, winter conditions, and disruptive work, students need to be relocated to ensure comfortable and safe living conditions. Students were notified of their new room assignments on December 29, 2025.
We will continue to provide updates on the status of repairs and the completion timeline. However, the intent is for you to remain in your new location through the end of the academic year. We apologize for the disruption and appreciate your cooperation as we work through this necessary repair.
Restoration work will be performed starting March 2, 2026, and FDO expects repairs to be completed during spring quarter.

2. When must students move to new campus locations?
Students were notified of their new assignments on December 29. Students are required to complete their moves by January 20, 2026. Students can begin their move as soon as January 4. Since campus housing remains open during the winter break, University Residences can accommodate students wishing to relocate before January 4. Please email housing@wwu.edu if you wish to relocate prior to Jan 4.
3. Can I keep my current roommate during this transition?
Students were asked to fill out a request form in the MyHousing portal, indicating their preferred buildings and whether they'd like to keep their current roommate. We strove to meet these preferences as much as possible, subject to available space. Although we tried our best to honor roommate requests, final assignments were determined by space and logistical factors.
4. How will I be assisted with my university accommodation?
Students with housing accommodations and roommate requests were prioritized for reassignment. Please contact the university’s housing office at URFacilities@wwu.edu or call (360) 650-6565 for relevant instructions and support with accommodations.
5. Will there be moving assistance from Sigma to my new location?
Yes. Packing supplies (boxes & tape) will be available in the Sigma lounges for resident use starting Jan 2, 2026.
- 1st & 2nd floor residents: Sigma floor 2 lounge (220B)
- 3rd floor residents: Sigma floor 3 lounge (321)
- 4th floor residents: Sigma floor 4 lounge (423)
- 5th floor residents: Sigma floor 5 lounge (511)
Each resident has been allocated a maximum of 12 boxes each. Please use only what you need to ensure there are enough supplies for everyone.
Moving trucks will be provided at select times between Jan 5-16, 2026 for students who sign up for a move time in MyHousing. For students with a 'relocation assistance' timeslot:
- Collect your new keys at your new building's community desk prior to your move timeslot. Desk hours & location are available on the building page.
- The truck pick-up location is the Ridge parking lot (15R). Be at the parking lot (see map below) with all of your items boxed, labeled with your name, and ready for loading ahead of your scheduled time.
- Your labeled boxes will be loaded onto a truck and transported to your new building. A passenger van will also accompany the truck if you need transportation.
- Please plan to meet the truck at your new building to retrieve your boxed items. Drop off will be near the entrance of your new building.
- Hand carts & moving bins will also be available at residential community desks for additional moving support.
Truck pick-up location is in the Ridge parking lot at the red X below:
Signing up for move assistance is optional. You are welcome to handle your move independently if you prefer!
6. Are there enough available campus bed spaces to accommodate all Sigma residents?
Yes! We do have vacant bed space for all Sigma residents. Students were notified of their new assignments on December 29.
7. Do I need to apply for housing again?
No, your housing application is for the entire academic year. Students were notified of their new room assignment on December 29.
8. Can residents return to Sigma after repairs are completed?
Based on the current situation regarding Sigma heating, residents will be unable to return to the building for living once repairs are completed. Although the estimated completion date for repairs is between February and early Spring Quarter 2026, the nature of the work—including jackhammering, destructive repairs, and uncertainty about the water leak source—means Sigma will not be suitable for habitation during or immediately following the repair period.
Health and Safety Considerations
It is due to concerns for the health and safety of residents stemming from extensive construction activities in resolving the heated water leak, remaining in Sigma is not an option. The building will officially close after students move out in mid-January 2026, and there are no indications it will reopen for residential use immediately following the completion of repairs.
Official Closure Timeline
- Students are expected to move out by mid-January 2026.
- The building will be officially closed at that time.
- Repair work will continue through February and into early Spring 2026.
- No general residential access will be allowed during or immediately after repairs.
9. My new room is a different room-type than my Sigma room. Do I have to pay more?
The new room you have been assigned may be a different tier than your Sigma room (for example, a double standard). There will be no rate increases for relocated residents—your original Sigma rate will be honored.
