The end of fall quarter is rapidly approaching! With Thanksgiving next week and finals week close behind, we want you to keep track of important housing information and deadlines.

Academic Breaks

Your on-campus building and room are available to you from fall opening to the end of spring quarter, but most students leave campus during academic breaks. While our residential buildings remain open, many campus services are suspended, including meal services in the dining commons and some building desk services, like package and mail pickup.

To see break schedules for other campus services, visit Dining Services, the Student Health CenterWestern Libraries and the Wade King Rec Center.

Thanksgiving Break: Nov. 24 – Nov. 28

Meal service in the dining commons ends after brunch on Wednesday, Nov. 24 and resumes at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 28.

Winter Break: Dec. 11, 2021 – Jan. 2, 2022

Meal service in the dining commons ends at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, 2021, and resumes at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 2, 2022.

Please review the content applicable, whether you are Leaving for Break or Staying for Break.

Open Space and New Roommate Arrival for Winter Quarter

We have a large incoming group of residents arriving, so most rooms with space will receive a new roommate.  If you prefer to move in with someone you already know, the move needs to be approved by your RD and your move completed by Friday, December 10.

New resident move-in is Sunday, Jan. 2 - if you leave for the break be sure to keep all empty spaces ready for a new roommate/suitemate, and your entire room should be clean and welcoming.

Please check your MyHousing Portal Dashboard and your email to see if you have someone new arriving for Winter. If you have a new roommate/suitemate please reach out and introduce yourself.

Moving Out

You are required to complete a proper checkout, and move out of housing by 4pm on December 10 if:

  1. You plan to live off campus next quarter
  2. You are not attending Western next quarter

If you move out of housing at the end of fall quarter, you must check out of your room by 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 10 to avoid the Winter Quarter Checkout Penalty.

If commencement ceremonies or transportation issues conflict with the deadline, contact your resident director in advance for permission to stay until noon on Saturday, Dec. 11.

Avoid Penalty Fees

If you are thinking about moving off campus any time soon, be aware of the contract breakage fee and Winter Quarter Checkout Penalty. Daily room rates are charged for anyone who leaves before the 2nd week of winter quarter.

For more information regarding fees and penalties, please visit our Financial Information page.

Proper Checkout Procedure

Before moving out, all residents must follow the Proper Checkout Procedure. Contact your resident adviser with questions.

HEALTH, SAFETY and READINESS CHECKS

On Friday, December 10 from 4 – 8 p.m., RA/AA staff conduct room checks ensuring your room meets the necessary occupancy safety standards outlined in Community Standards.

VACANT SPACE READINESS

Cleaning, maintenance and inspections are completed to ensure rooms are ready for incoming residents.

  • Staff members will clean vacant spaces requiring action, typically one hour of work, with a follow-on inspection performed by a supervisor which takes roughly five minutes.
  • All new room assignments are inspected by UR management.  Staff may require additional visits to address maintenance and/or furniture issues.

Please note: All staff wear required personal protective equipment when entering your space.

Action Required: You must adhere to one of the following guidelines if you are present while staff perform work:

  • Remain in your bedroom with the door closed and wear your face covering.
  • You may temporarily leave your living space while staff perform actions.

Work Schedule:

Staff perform work from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on the following dates:

·

    • November 29 – December 3: Completely vacant bedrooms, apartments, suites.
    • December 11 – December 14: Completely vacant bedrooms, apartments, suites.
    • December 15 – January 1: New room assignment actions for Winter Move In.
