Position Summary

The Overnight Athletic Camp Counselor works with the Guest Housing Manager and designated Resident Directors (RDs) to provide overnight supervision of minors attending selected WWU Athletic camps.

Primary Responsibilities

General Responsibilities

  • Sleep overnight, for duration of the camp, in the camps’ assigned residence hall
  • Provide direct overnight supervision to an assigned group approximately 10 campers between ages 12 -17
  • Document camper information daily and preform necessary follow-up as appropriate
  • Liaise with supervisor or RD on-call in after-hours situations
  • Maintain professional relationship with parents, campers, coaches, Guest Housing staff and age-appropriate communication with campers
  • Follow WWU policies and procedures
  • Identify building and safety issues and submit maintenance requests as needed
  • Attend required staff meetings, pre-camp training and task assignments

Night & Morning of Camp Responsibilities

  • Be present and visible within the residence hall while campers are returning to hall
  • Properly account for assigned campers daily through nightly head count, rounds, bed checks & morning wake-ups of assigned building, floors and/or rooms
  • Pick-up and escort assigned campers to and from the residence hall
  • Provide initial support in event of missing camper or crisis and follow response protocol
  • Coordinate age-appropriate evening activity for camp participants, if requested for the camp

  2. Strong organization skills and attention to detail
  3. Ability to work independently and in small groups to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision
  4. Maintain a positive, upbeat and enthusiastic attitude
  5. Ability to work in a highly structured and fast-paced environment
  6. Experience making sound independent judgment and decisions in emergency circumstances
  7. Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with a diverse group that includes Guest Housing staff, WWU Staff/Coaches and youth participants
  8. Experience working with large groups, summer camps, athletic teams and or youth supervision

Required Qualifications to Apply

  1. At least 18 years old
  2. Be currently enrolled at WWU, or be officially admitted by Spring 2020.
  3. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
    • Fairhaven College student candidates must be in good academic standing with Fairhaven College Administration.
    • Spring 2020 transfer student candidates must provide a transcript from their previous institution.
  4. Not be on disciplinary probation or in deferred-eviction/eviction status.
  5. Not be on performance probation if employed elsewhere on campus.
  6. Be able to work required camps, listed below
  7. Be available for Mandatory 2-day training in mid-June. Specific dates TBD.

Required Availability & Hours

  • Work a minimum of four camps, including the required camp
  • Available for work beginning at 6 p.m. on arrival date and each subsequent night of camp from 8 p.m. - 8:30 a.m. until Departure date of camp
  • If assigned as ‘lead OACC’ during a camp, must be comfortable holding duty phone & responding to calls overnight

Compensation

  1. OACC's are paid per night/shift worked. The Summer 2020 rate is TDB. For reference, the Summer 2019 rate was $75 per night/shift
  2. Overnight housing is provided (and required) for duration of camp worked
  3. Summer Athletic Camp Counselors are eligible for optional, reduced rate for Summer Quarter Housing in Birnam Wood

Terms of Employment

  1. Be available for all anticipated contract dates: June 14 - August 24, 2020
  2. Participate in and be compensated for mandatory training.
  3. Fulfill position requirements as described in this document, the position agreement, and as assigned.

About Us

University Residences will host over 8,000 camp and conference guests in the residences halls during the summer. Guests can range from toddler to 90 years of age and will arrive from all over the world. Guests come for a variety of reasons from WWU first-year student orientation to youth sports camps to adult national international conferences and training workshops. Our select staff of close to 40 students, work to accommodate guest needs and requests, while providing a high level of customer service under the direct supervision of the Manager of Guest & Housing Operations.
