Ty Moores
He/Him, Residential Office Assistant
About
My name is Ty, and I'll be majoring in Sociology, but I’ll probably be moving into education after that. I'm from Seattle, Washington, where I grew up and worked while I went to school on Vashon Island. I worked in the coffee shop that my parents own in Seattle, where I met a lot of people that helped me decide that I want to major in Sociology. My hobbies include going to the gym, playing basketball, video games, etc. Now I am on the men’s crew team here at Western, which I really love, and which has come to be a big part of my life up here in Bellingham. This takes up a lot of my time, as practices are very early in the morning and we sometimes have more than one workout a day. I lived on campus in Ridgeway Kappa my freshman year, so I'm very excited to be a part of the team that keeps the campus residences operating smoothly. Balancing crew, classes, and work hasn’t always been easy, but it’s taught me a lot about time management and perseverance. Waking up before dawn for practice means I’ve had to adjust my schedule, but the discipline I’ve gained from the sport has actually helped me stay focused in my studies. Sociology has been a perfect fit because it connects to so much of what I’ve experienced—whether it’s observing social interactions in the coffee shop or seeing how teamwork functions on the crew team. I’ve also started thinking about how education could be a natural next step, especially since I enjoy mentoring younger teammates and helping others learn. Living in Ridgeway Kappa was a great introduction to campus life, and now that I’m working in residence operations, I get to help other students have that same positive experience. It’s given me a deeper appreciation for the community here at Western, and I love being part of making campus life better for everyone. Between early-morning workouts, classes, and my job, my days are packed, but I wouldn’t have it any other way—I’ve met some of my closest friends through crew and residence life, and I know these experiences will shape my future, whether in education or beyond.
