What is a Living Learning Community (LLC)?

Our Living Learning Community (LLC) program seeks to enhance residents’ social and academic experience by providing distinct community opportunities within the broader on-campus living environment. With attention to the specific goals and outcomes for each individual LLC, the LLC program aims to foster a sense of belonging and provides tailored opportunities for collaborative learning and personal growth for all participating residents.

University Residences currently offers four living learning communities (LLCs): IndigiLivin (NEW for 2026), La Comunidad, Pamoja, and Pride. These communities are open to all residents, and are characterized by housing placement within designated residential areas, shared co-curricular experiences, access to resources, and exclusive programmatic offerings based on each specific LLC’s area of focus and goals. Our identity-based LLCs aim to foster a sense of belonging and provide tailored opportunities for collaborative learning and personal growth centered around the experiences of historically marginalized communities.

As our LLC program continues to evolve in partnership with campus stakeholders and with feedback from residents, we are excited to provide safe and supportive environments for residents to engage authentically and explore their understanding of themselves, peers, and the world.

Goals of LLCs

  • To create a sense of belonging and build a caring and connected community among residents within each individual LLC and across the LLC program.
  • To provide students with opportunities for learning and the development of their own multidimensional personal and social identities.
  • To connect residents with resources and partners across campus that promote academic success and personal wellness.

Origin of LLCs

In response to student feedback showing a need for more spaces of support and connection, the initial Affinity Housing program was developed. With the opening of Alma Clark Glass in 2021, Black Affinity Housing (renamed Pamoja in 2025) was established as the first affinity community on the WWU campus. The program continued to expand based on student feedback, with additions of Pride Housing, La Comunidad, and most recently IndigiLivin. We are excited for the continued evolution of our program as 2025 marks a transition into a more comprehensive Living Learning Community model, offering more intentional opportunities for residents to learn and engage. We continue to listen to student feedback for further expansion of our Living Learning Community outcomes and offerings.
