University Residences offers housing accommodations during the academic off-season for activities held on Western’s campus or in the greater Bellingham area. Between mid-June and September, thousands of visitors stay in Western’s residential buildings while attending conferences, institutes, tournaments, festivals and youth camps. Under the supervision of the Facilities Associate Director, the student works 40 hours per week along with some evenings and weekends. Housing accommodations in Birnam Wood are available to student the Facilities Assistant for the summer at a discounted rate.
The summer Facilities Assistant (FA) completes all tasks required to effectively support the Facilities unit prepare the residential facilities for occupancy. Paid training will be provided to prepare the summer FA to do their work in a safe and efficient manner.
- Conduct public area and private space (bedroom, suite, apartment) inspections. Provide summary of findings. Submit work orders as needed.
- Perform inventory cycle count and condition evaluation efforts on University Residences public area and private space assets. Update database as appropriate.
- Recognize and report damage and maintenance issues
- Assist with furniture projects to support living space configuration objectives. Work may require reconfiguring student beds as appropriate.
- Assist the Warehouse Operator in loading and unloading trucks and vans; uses dollies, hand trucks, and other equipment incidental to transport of goods as appropriate. Perform pick-up, transfer and delivery of goods.
- Perform administrative functions such as processing paperwork, organizing files and other tasks as needed.
- Positively and constructively work in a team environment to accomplish all tasks assigned.
- Work on special projects to gain business/operational experience supporting career development.
- Other duties as assigned by management staff.
- Enrolled half-time or more in the previous quarter (Spring 2020) and will be enrolled half-time or more the following quarter (Fall 2020), or enrolled as a matriculated student with a half-time or higher credit load during summer 2020
- Physical ability to lift up to 25lbs without help
- Current Washington state driver’s license
- Willingness and ability to complete tasks with a high standard of quality and within a given timeline
- Good work ethic (dependable, responsible and self-motivated)
- Ability to collaborate on a staff team
- Should be available for the entire contract term; see dates below
- If hired, must complete the new-hire paperwork prior to first day of employment
Terms of Employment
- Employment contract dates: June 15 through September 20, 2020
- Weekly workload is 40 hours: Monday – Friday (8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.) additional evenings or weekends may be assigned
- Starting wage is $13.50 per hour
- Optional housing for the contract term is offered in Birnam Wood at a special discount rate.
