The residential experience is designed to help you learn about yourself, and how to live and work with others. These learning outcomes begin with your roommate experience—even if you knew your roommate before coming to Western. Some students are nervous about sharing a room, and others are eager to meet new people and get involved. Either way, your roommate experience will teach you something about yourself, and even more about others, relationships and community.
The housing application includes a survey about your daily habits and tendencies, and your responses are used to assign a compatible roommate. Roommates with similar bedtimes, study habits, smoking status, and noise tolerance prove to cohabitate quite well, even if they share nothing else in common. Letting us assign you a “random” roommate is highly recommended because it can result in an amazing first-year experience, an unexpected friendship, and unique opportunities that come only from a relationship of circumstance.
Once you apply for housing, you can invite someone you know to be your roommate. You must know your requested roommate’s student ID number to submit an invitation, and they must accept your invitation by June 15 to confirm the request. Requests for suitemates are not accepted. Every effort will be made to place completed requests together, provided you meet all housing deadlines. Your room assignment will be based upon the best priority date in your pair/triple. Please note that a two-person roommate group does not guarantee a double room; you may be assigned to a triple room with a third person that we select.
Once you apply for housing, you have the option of searching for potential roommates on our secure website, Roommate Search. Searching for a compatible roommate is a great option for students desiring someone with characteristics similar to your own, such as academic interests, religious beliefs, food allergies, etc. Once you have identified a mutually satisfactory match, the two of you must complete the process for inviting someone you know. (See above.)
Roommate Search is available for fall housing applicants only, due to space constraints for incoming mid-year residents. A roommate will be assigned to you based upon the roommate profile you created in your winter or spring housing application. If you know the person you wish to invite as your roommate, invites are granted on a space available bases; both of you must email Housing@wwu.edu to confirm the invite.

Your resident adviser will be your first point of contact regarding roommate-related issues or concerns.
