HELPs Program for Fall 2017

A group of HELPs ready to help with move in

Looking for a unique volunteer opportunity that is fun, appreciated and gets you involved? Join the crew of nearly 300 students that help facilitate an effortless move-in of over 3,000 campus residents! Known as HELPs, these fantastic volunteers assist with directing cars, unloading vehicles, and hauling tons of belongings to student rooms. New and returning students are invited to participate, and living on campus is not required!

Duties

  • Greet and direct students and families as they arrive.
  • Unload vehicles and carry students' belongings to their rooms.
  • Direct traffic, communicate by radio, and monitor long wait times.
  • Maintain residential trash and recycling depots.
  • Shifts are 4–6 hours and include a lunch break.

Qualifications

  1. Must be a Western student, but living on campus is not required.
  2. Must be energetic and have a positive attitude.
  3. Must be able to stand for several hours at a time.
  4. Must be able to work outside in the sun, rain or wind.
  5. Ability to lift 30 pounds is preferred, but not required.
  6. Must be receptive to training and willing to take direction.
  7. Must be friendly and helpful to a diverse population of students and families.
  8. Must be available to move in on Thursday, September 21 (no exceptions) between 9am - 1:30pm.
  9. Must be available for training and work September 21–24 (no exceptions).
  10. Must be available work all shifts as assigned (no exceptions).

Compensation

  • Receive the official 2017 HELPs T-Shirt to wear during Move-In.
  • Move into your room four days early at no additional charge.
  • Nine meals are provided throughout all of the scheduled training and work hours (see below).
    • Thursday, September 21: dinner
    • Friday, September 22: breakfast, lunch and dinner
    • Saturday, September 23: breakfast, lunch and dinner
    • Sunday, September 24: breakfast and lunch
