Web Application Developer

The Web Application Developer is responsible for developing, modifying, and maintaining web-based software for use on both the University Residences website and internal tools used by University Residences staff members.

Am I Qualified?

We're looking for somebody who has experience working with some of these things, but you also learn a lot on the job. If you meet most of the following criteria, you should definitely apply.

  • Working knowledge of XHTML and Semantic Web Design
  • Experience with one or more web scripting languages
  • Practical knowledge of how databases work
  • Motivated to learn new things independently
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment effectively
  • Excellent problem solving and communication skills
  • Interest in learning about and using the latest web technologies
  • Must intend to enroll through the end of Spring 2010

Need Specifics?

We know at least a few of you are curious about our current setup, so here is a list of some of the tools we currently use.

  • Most of our development is done in Python and Django with MySQL databases
  • We maintain older PHP apps
  • Our servers run on FreeBSD and our pages are served via Apache

Will I Be Challenged?

Here's some the things that we value and would make you an even better candidate if you know any of this stuff.

  • Database design and query languages such as SQL
  • Object-oriented programming concepts
  • JavaScript and/or JavaScript libraries
  • Cascading style sheets (CSS)
  • Revision control systems (e.g., Subversion, CVS, etc.)
  • Web frameworks (e.g., Django, Symfony, etc.)
  • Accessibility/usability concepts and testing
  • Photography, graphic design, or other presentation of visual information
  • Unix-like operating systems (e.g., Linux, FreeBSD, etc.)
  • Technical writing

Terms

Must be available to work 15–19 hours per week during the academic year and at least 20 hours per week during the summer. Hourly wage is $9.50 per hour for both work-study and non-work study students. You must maintain a 2.00 cumulative GPA minimum during employment, and be taking at least 10 credits (8 for graduates). Preference given to applicants that live on-campus currently and intend to live on for the 2010–2011 academic year. Summer on-campus housing is available at a discounted rate.
