Interior Paint Procedures

University painters work continuously throughout the year painting residential buildings. Sherwin Williams, Harmony Interior Latex Semi-Gloss is used. This paint contains NO volatile organic compounds (VOC). (Material Data Safety Sheet SW Harmony)

During breaks painters concentrate on bathrooms or other areas that are not accessible when students are present. In these spaces Sherwin Williams Bath Semi-Gloss is used. This paint is classified as low VOC paint. (Material Data Safety Sheet SW Bath) It is our policy to ensure the highest standards of environmental practice related to the maintenance of our buildings. Facilities staff and painters meet with students prior to the beginning of painting. Please attend the meeting.

Students allergic to latex paint with NO V.O.C. must send a copy of a physician's excuse to Karen Neely at University Residences, Facilities MS-9195. Or have the doctor email it to or fax it attention Karen Neely at 360-650-6890. The excuse can be on the physician's letterhead or prescription form. Please include your name, building, and room number on all messages. Your room will not be painted. Please let us know EARLY so that painters can plan their schedule ahead of time.

Painting may be scheduled during quiet week and finals week as many students leave early. If the schedule does not work for you during these two weeks, contact the painters in the building to reschedule or call 360-650-3414 to notify the supervisor of the Paint Shop.

The painters will post a notice on the student room door prior to the day painting is scheduled . Please remove all posters and protect sensitive equipment and possessions by putting them on the bed. Painters will drape the area completely before painting and will move furniture as necessary.

Painters begin at 8:30 a.m. and end around 4:30 p.m. the same day. Painters will move furniture, drape the room, prepare, patch, and paint two coats of material in that time. By the end of the work day students can return.

Paint is dry to the touch and will continue curing for a few days. Please do not tape up posters or press furniture against the walls until 2 days have passed.
