What are Antioxidants?

By Kara Ten Kley, Registered Dietitian

Antioxidants are important, naturally occurring nutrients that are your first line of defense against premature aging and damage of body cells. They promote a healthy immune system and fight disease. People who eat 5 or more servings per day are less likely to develop cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Choose 5 – 9 Servings a day of fresh fruits and vegetables! Deep and richly colored fruits and vegetables are the most concentrated in antioxidants. Below are some examples of a few antioxidants, their benefits and common food sources.

Antioxidant Heart Benefit Some Food Sources
Lycopene Reduces heart disease and prostate cancer Tomatoes and cooked tomato products
