Students in University Residences enhance their Western Experience in diverse and inclusive communities that foster active learning, leadership, social responsibility, civic engagement, and effective citizenship: supported by a high quality, attractive and sustainable campus environment.

Western Washington University Dining Services, in partnership with student leaders in the National Residence Hall Honorary is pleased to sponsor three (3) $1,500 scholarships for the 2008-09 academic year. The scholarships will be applied towards the winners’ student account. The purpose of the scholarship is to recognize students who demonstrate leadership, social responsibility, civic engagement and effective citizenship through their active participation in diverse and inclusive residential communities and the university community at large.

Qualifications

  1. Undergraduate students who have lived in University Residences for a minimum of two quarters by the scholarship application due date, and who will continue to live on campus for the 2008-09 academic year.
  2. Have at least a cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  3. Scholarship winners will be selected based upon the following criteria:
    • Completed scholarship application
    • Demonstrates frequent participation in residence life programs and activities, and campus activities that involve social responsibility, civic engagement and effective citizenship
    • Demonstrates leadership potential and development
    • Uses leadership skills to promote diverse and inclusive communities
    • Promotes activities which encourage leadership qualities in other residents
    • Has at least one letter of recommendation from a member of the residence life staff, a leader of a student organization, an advisor, or another member of the WWU faculty or staff.
  4. Students who have applied for this scholarship in prior years (whether awarded the scholarship or not) are eligible to apply again, per the application procedure below.

Application Procedure

  1. Complete the WWU Dining Services/NRHH Excellence in Leadership Scholarship application and submit online before midnight PDT on Monday, April 7, 2008.
  2. Ensure at least one letter of recommendation is submitted by email from a member of the WWU faculty or staff (may include residence life staff) by no later than April 7, 2008. Email to Lisa North, with the subject line: Recommendation Letter for (student name).
  3. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
